You Haven't Seen Everything
During our day-to-day at the MSPCA, we're prepared to see anything and everything. Thin goats, flea-infested dogs, cats with unknown wounds. But some things you just are not prepared for.
In early February, we received a call and some disturbing photos from our Law Enforcement team of two horses standing on feet of compacted manure. Their withers making contact with the rafters above. The next day, with the assistance of our Law Enforcement office, Nevins staff, a veterinarian, and local police, we were able to free them after hours of digging away at the waste.
Their story was only beginning though. Once they were free, the extent of their neglect was even more readily apparent. No one at the MSPCA had seen hooves quite like these, and the photos speak for themselves. The staff at Nevins went to work rehabilitating these ladies with the help of our veterinarian, farrier, and volunteer therapeutics. For the first time in likely years, these mares felt the sun on their coats and a loving hand, brushing them clean.
After months of rehabilitation, it unfortunately became apparent that Tia was never going to be able to lead a life free of pain. The hearbreaking decision was made to lay her to rest, surrounded by her team of supporters. Shakira, luckily, did stand a chance and continued to flourish. Her hooves, which were an astounding 2 feet overgrown, each weighing about 7 lbs, were slowly beginning to take a normal shape with frequent trimming. And her charming personality stole our hearts.
In April, a previous adopter reached out looking for a companion for their MSPCA alum, and fellow Arabian, Skandalous. It seemed like a match made in heaven for Shakira. This fiery redhead now lives a life free of worry and full of love! We are so grateful we got to play a pivotal part of her story, and we couldn't do it without the gracious support of our donors! Please consider donating in honor of Shakira and rememberance of Tia.
