Let's Support a Great (And Fuzzy) Cause!
The marathon bombings on April 15th, 2013 changed the face of running forever. In light of this incredible tragedy, everyone in the city and runners across the country united to show the world that we are #BostonStrong. This incredible community was the main inspiration for me to qualify and train for the historic 2014 Boston marathon.
After the attacks, a major comfort was my fur baby, Lady BunBun. Throughout a range of emotions from sadness to anger, my mini-lop showed unconditional love and was a incredible companion in a dark time. On a broader reaching scale, Comfort Animal teams from the MSPCA were deployed in Boston following the Marathon bombings to visit hospitalized victims, college students, running clubs, and many other affected members of the community.
Now is my turn to repay the favor. We can be #BostonStrong for the animals! Not all animals are as fortunate as Lady BunBun. The statistics on animal cruelty and abuse are staggering. Over 30 million animals in the U.S. die each year from cruelty, neglect, and exploitation. The mission of the MSPCA-Angell is to protect animals, relieve their suffering, advance their health and welfare, prevent cruelty, and work for a just and compassionate society.
Let's make my running the 2014 Marathon mean something more than 26.2 miles. Please support this awesome cause and a proud city!

Who is MELISSA?
I have been a runner since I was 12 and an animal lover since birth. This will be my fifth marathon and second time at Boston. I also enjoy half marathons (10 under my belt) and any costume run (Batman is a favorite!). When I'm not running as Batman, I am a graduate student at Harvard completing my PhD in Biology. Running has always been a joy in my life, and I cannot wait for the opportunity to join so many fellow runners at the 2014 Marathon!
Who is LADY BUNBUN?
As soon as I saw this mini-lop in 2010, I knew we were destined to be best buds. Due to her spunky personality and panda-like features, I rushed to the MSPCA right after she was available for adoption. Every since, it has been a match made in heaven. Despite her charismatic and lively personality, Lady BunBun did not always have an easy life. She had a major dental disease for the past few years that resulted in difficulty eating and much pain for our furry friend. Due to the perseverance and incredible care of the Angell hospital staff, Lady BunBun has recovered to full health after multiple surgeries and is back to her happy, binky rabbit self (though let's admit it, she can totally be a diva).
The MSPCA has been a family to me. Running in support of this amazing cause is the least that I can do!
