Guinea pigs can make wonderful pets! They are very social creatures which means that they generally need at least one companion! Of course guinea pigs should only be kept with other piggies of the same sex. A pair of guinea pigs needs at minimum 10.5 sq. feet of cage space, or roughly 30″ x 50″ with a solid bottom, but more room is always encouraged! Guinea pigs can be quite noisy which can be lovely as long as you are expecting it!

Meet Ginger, a spirited adult female canine searching for her forever family. Initially cautious around new faces, Ginger blossoms into an exuberant, playful companion once she feels secure. Though her enthusiasm can lead to some jumpy moments, she’s diligently refining her etiquette. We think this sensitive soul would do best in a home as an only dog, though she might enjoy a couple of well matched dog friends.
Budgerigars, the most common parakeet we see, are native to Australia where they live in massive flocks in the grasslands. Parakeets tend to be docile, gentle, can be easy to tame and can even talk! Despite their small size, these birds can have large vocabularies and can make a wonderful training companion. We recommend that parakeets live in pairs or groups whenever possible. Parakeets can live up to 7-15 years with proper nutrition and care, and can be a loyal companion.
We recommend a cage that is at least 27”x24” (Width x depth) with a maximum of ½” bar spacing. Cages should include lots of perches, trays for food/water and lots of toys for enrichment. Nests can be provided but should be removed if any females begin to lay eggs. We do not recommend a seed only diet as it can lead to malnutrition and other potential issues, please consult your vet for specific diet recommendations.
The needs of each parakeet are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the parakeet you are interested in, please let us know in your inquiry! We are happy to provide guidance and advice.

*Please be sure your town regulations allow for guinea fowl on your property before you inquire about adoption!*
Worried about ticks and flies around your barn this summer? Our guinea fowl can help! We have several male guinea fowl available for adoption and they are experts at eating up any and all insects around your property. They are a bit shy and skittish around people, but get along with each other very nicely and have easily coexisted within a mixed flock of roosters and hens. They have stunning feathers and a very distinct voice when they get all riled up. They are a super entreating bunch who love to zoom around in their outdoor enclosure and perch up high in the sunshine.
Meet Cinnamon- this sweet pig is looking for her forever home. She currently lives with her sister Cocoa and enjoys her company. She can be found snuggling with her sister, or sharing a meal with her- as she loves her veggies!

This cat is part of our Working Cat Program! This program is for cats that are not well suited for an indoor-only type lifestyle but would thrive in environments with more space, a job, and/or less pressure from humans and other pets.
This cat originally came to us from the outdoors so we don’t know a lot about his past. While they are used to people being in somewhat close proximity to feed and care for them, these are not currently social cats but would make great ‘behind the scenes’ working cats! Interested adopters must have a safe, secure structure or barn for a working cat and be able to provide adequate time for acclimation.
If you are interested, please give us a call today!
If you would like to learn more about the Working Cat Program, or would like to fill out an application, please visit: www.mspca.org/barncat
Leslie is a young and active firecracker of a woman and is ready to leave the shelter life behind her. Leslie has many talents, her most impressive being an escape artist who can jump higher than you’ll ever believe, so she is looking for a family who is willing to get creative with a suitable confinement space as she settles in slowly to her new life. Leslie has lots of energy to burn, both physically and mentally, and will need a lot of structure and enrichment to keep her occupied in her new home. She is a smart cookie who is excited to learn new things as long as there are tasty treats involved! She could potentially live with another neutral dog who will give her space to do her own thing, and also has a nice history with children. If you’d like to learn about this spunky ball of canine energy with the gorgeous smile, come in during open hours to see if you would be a good match for Leslie!
If you think this dog could be a good match for your home and would like to learn more, stop by our Boston Adoption Center. We have open adoption hours Tuesday-Sunday from 12pm-3pm – no appointment needed to speak to a staff person regarding available dogs.
Preparing your home for your new dog or puppy ahead of time can help ease the transition for your new pet and set you both up for success should there be a dog that’s a good match! To learn more about how to make the first few weeks with your new dog or puppy the most successful it can be, please visit www.mspca.org/petresources.

Please note, in an effort to keep the stress levels reduced for the dogs in our care, our dog kennel areas will not be open to walk through. Interested adopters will work with a matchmaker on staff to determine which dog(s) they’re interested in – and if we can identify a match, potential adopters will be able to meet those dogs outside of the kennel. Cat and small animal areas will remain open to walk through.
We’d like to introduce a very special cat named Dad Kat. He is a 4 year old, and has a progressive case of FeLV – or Feline Leukemia Virus – which will shorten his lifespan, and we are hoping to find him a loving indoor-only home where he can live out his life. Despite his diagnosis, he can be social and affectionate with those he knows, once he is comfortable in his new space. Dad Kat would need to be the only cat in the household, or have feline friends that also have FeLV. Interested adopters should click the inquire button below to learn more and shelter staff will provide additional counseling on FeLV and answer any questions at the time of adoption.
More info on FeLV can be found here: https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951934
Lewis and Clark are ready to head off on their next adventure.
Ferrets are highly active and incredibly goofy animals. Much like a young child, ferrets can get themselves into a lot of trouble! As such the home needs to be ferret-proofed, they even fit through spaces larger than the diameter of a quarter! Although ferrets can get into lots of mischief they can be incredibly fun and entertaining companions. Ferrets are carnivores and must receive a high-protein diet.
We recommend a large solid floored, multi-level cage similar to those made for ferrets or chinchillas. The cage should include houses or other structures for the ferret to hide in. Ferrets can be litterbox trained and we highly recommend it as they can be quite messy.
The needs of each ferret are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the ferret you are interested in, please give us a call! We are happy to provide guidance and advice.

*Please be sure your town regulations allow for roosters on your property before you inquire about adoption!*
Roosters for hire! We have so many good boys hanging out in our bachelor pad waiting for a flock of ladies of their very own. Our roosters are respectful of people and social with other birds – they are ready to do their job of protecting your hens! We have a wide variety of sizes, breeds, and temperaments. Roosters are full of personality and make great additions to any hobby flock!
Tulip is a sweet and shy lady who is looking for a new home of her own! Tulip came to us with a group of dogs that we received from an overcrowded kennel environment in the Texas. We don’t know too much about her history, but we know she is already making progress and coming out of her shell in New England. Tulip has been through a lot of transitions in a short period of time and she is looking for a patient family who can help show her the ropes and adjust to a home environment at her own pace. She can be nervous in new situations, but she is already getting more comfortable and asking for snuggles with some of her friends. Tulip has been around other dogs and might do well with another social dog to help build her confidence. She might be okay with older kids who can read her body language and respect her boundaries!

Meet Steve, the ultimate bundle of joy! This adult male dog exudes boundless energy and excitement, loving both dogs and people alike. Whether bouncing around with furry friends or greeting new human pals, Steve’s infectious enthusiasm never wanes. Despite his exuberance, he’s a gentle soul, ready to shower affection on anyone willing to reciprocate. If you’re seeking a loyal companion to fill your days with laughter and love, Steve is your guy, ready to embark on countless adventures by your side.
Doves can be tamed but tend to be more “hands off” birds. They tend to vocalize throughout the day with a “coo”, dissimilar to the screeching or whistling of many other birds. Doves can be found around the world, and can live up to 10 years with proper nutrition and care. We recommend that doves live in pairs or groups whenever possible.
We recommend a cage that is at least 32”x23” (Width x depth) with a maximum of ?-¾” bar spacing. Cages should include lots of flat surfaces to perch on, trays for food/water and lots of toys for enrichment. Unlike many other species of birds, doves are unable to climb up cage bars, and tend to move back and forth making a wider cage more appealing to them. Doves should be provided with regular opportunities for bathing, and unlike parrots require grit as part of their regular diet to aid in digestion.
The needs of each dove are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the dove you are interested in, please let us know in your inquiry! We are happy to provide guidance and advice.

Meet Clementine. She is a spirited adult feline! Sweet but spicy, but she is full of personality and can make a great companion for the right person or family. It’s important she finds someone who understands her needs and temperament and can give her time to settle in a new home.
Rats are nocturnal, highly social and extremely intelligent animals! Due to the highly social nature of rats we prefer to match them with homes with existing rats, or to adopters looking to take home two or more rats. Rats can be food driven (and great foragers!) making them excellent animals to train. We always recommend the use of positive reinforcement training with your animals, and are happy to provide more information on this topic.
We recommend providing a safe indoor enclosure that allows the rat plenty of space to exercise. The minimum cage size should be 2’x2.5’x2’, with good ventilation (no glass enclosures) and must have a solid base. Preferably the shelter includes multiple levels, with appropriate use of linens or paper bedding and lots of rat appropriate toys. Rats should never be housed with other animals, each species should always have its own housing.
The needs of each rat are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the rat you are interested in, please let us know in your inquiry! We are happy to provide guidance and advice.

Mom
1 year old
Spayed female
Black domestic shorthair
Mom is not really a Donna Reed mom, she’s more like a Peggy Bundy mom. This sassy lady came to us with her litter of kittens and now that she’s done raising them she’s ready to focus on her own self care and priorities. Those include being pet on her own schedule, playing with her toys, lounging around and not being bothered. We don’t know how she’d be with other animals but a cat savvy home with adults and possibly older kids will be best suited to pamper her the way she deserves.
Mom wants limited visitors, so if you sound like a good fit ask our staff or volunteers about meeting her!
