    Dear Friend:

Twelve years ago, a puppy named Unique found herself for sale in a pet shop, and although we don’t know for certain that she was born in a “puppy mill,” the chances of that being true are high. This sweet-faced little dog is a Powder Puff Chinese Crested, one of a number of rare breeds that are often victimized in puppy mills, then passed along to pet shops for sale.

Unique is thriving under our care right now, but she’s felt a lot of pain and misery in her life. That’s also true for so many of the animals who come to us for help. It takes an amazing effort, combining all of our resources – rescue workers, medical staff, caregivers, adoption services – and, of course, YOU – to help turn those negative feelings around.

With your help, we transform lives of pain and misery into a world of love, care, and security. However, the need for our services is high, as more and more abandoned, neglected, and abused animals are coming through our doors.

That’s why I hope I can count on your support.

Unique was purchased and brought to a home where she remained for twelve years. Just recently her owners brought her to us, saying they’d be evicted if they didn’t get rid of their dog. When we met Unique, we realized they’d really never been responsible pet owners.

Poor Unique was just skin and bones. Our veterinarian quickly discovered that Unique’s malnutrition was due to the fact that she needed extensive dental work. Her mouth hurt so much she couldn’t force herself to eat.

I’d like you to stop and just think about that. This poor, innocent little dog, twelve years old, was slowly starving to death because the pain of eating was just unbearable. And no one noticed, or tried to help her.

Had her owners noticed anything about this poor dog’s physical condition that they wanted to share with our adoption counselor?  “She’s deaf,” was all they told us. But in fact, Unique is not deaf.

I think it was they who were deaf to her silent pleas for help.

This sweet, sad, skinny little senior dog had such “unique” problems that she really touched our hearts. She’s in foster care now, and once she’s well enough for adoption, we’ll find her a great new home.

You might say “Unique” could be the name of every animal who comes through our doors, no matter what their story.  We care for them as individuals, assessing their condition and their needs, and then doing everything we can to help them heal and prosper.

Please, can you help us with your gift so we can continue to keep our doors open to every “unique” animal? Please make the most generous gift you can. You will truly be a lifesaver!

Thank you, on behalf of all the animals you will save.

    Sincerely,
