Equine Ambulance Program

Founded in 1868, the MSPCA Equine Ambulance Program has  evolved into the nation's pre-eminent service in equine
emergency response and rescue.

We have revolutionized the level of expertise available to companion horses and equine athletes in need of urgent veterinary care. Setting a standard of excellence, we also have established the country's first training program in equine rescue and emergency transport - training more than 4,000 professionals from around the globe.

Innovative Rescue Glide
The MSPCA developed and distributes the original Rescue Glide, Changing the way we move downed horses. This innovation provided a streamlined way to humanely move these at risk animals. Horses who previously had no chance of survival can now be safely and easily transported to a veterinary hospital. The Rescue Glide has revolutionized emergency equine transport across North America. Rescue Training
In 1994, we launched the first national training program in Equine Rescue and Emergency Transport. Over the year, our training program has continued to grow. We have conducted hands-on workshops for thousands of equine professionals, veterinarians, event officials, humane and public safety personnel and state animal response teams.

Among leading organizations participating in our workshop are:

  • Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine
  • University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine New Bolton Center
  • University of California at Davis
  • University of Minnesota
  • University of Ontario at Guelph
  • Rolex Kentucky
  • Fair Hill International
  • Pennsylvania State Animal Response Team (PASART)
  • State of Massachusetts Animal Response Team (SMART)
  • Thomson, CT Volunteer Fire Department
  • Groton Pony Club

Veterinary Referral Service
To help horse owners throughout New England deal with emergencies, we offer a Veterinary Referral Service. This lifesaving service is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Upon being contacted by a veterinarian, we dispatch an ambulance with staff specially trained in equine emergency rescue and transport. This service requires a veterinarian to be on-site overseeing the medical condition of the disabled horse.

Sport Horse Ambulance Service
For over a decade, the Sport Horse Ambulance Service has protected horses competing in events across North America. For all types of accidents and injuries, we help on-site veterinarians provide the most effective, humane treatment possible.

Approved by Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) veterinarians at the 1996 Olympic Games, our ambulances are equipped with state-of-the-art rescue equipment. Our highly-trained staff has played a key role in safety operations at major competitions worldwide including the Pan American Games, Rolex Kentucky and Fair Hill International.
