Two Pound Kitten Dropped in City Mail Box MSPCA Cares for Postina and Urges Public Not to Illegally Abandon Animals UPDATE: Postina has been adopted. Click here to read her continuing story.
During the scheduled afternoon pick-up, a US Postal Service letter carrier discovered Postina and with the help of another Good Samaritan, ensured that she was quickly brought to the MSPCA Animal Care and Adoption Center in Jamaica Plain. Following several days of nourishment and rest as well as a round of vaccinations, the MSPCA is preparing to place Postina up for adoption. Pet surrender is becoming more prevalent in Massachusetts as the recession continues to leave pet owners struggling financially. The MSPCA, which tracks reasons for the surrender of animals to its own adoption centers (more than 28,000 animals in 2008), has noted a 48% increase in pet owners citing financial reasons for surrendering their pets. The MSPCA continues to work diligently to keep pets and their owners together through several financial assistance programs including low cost spay/neuter surgeries starting at $50 per pet including vaccinations, microchip ID and veterinary exam. The MSPCA is also reminding the public that animal abandonment is a felony crime punishable by up to a $2,500 fine and 5 years in prison. Anyone with information regarding Postina’s abandonment is urged to contact the MSPCA’s Law Enforcement department at (617) 522-6008 or (800) 628-5808. Surrendering an animal to the MSPCA is free and can be done 24 hours a day/7 days a week through the MSPCA-Boston Animal Care and Adoption Center or the Angell Animal Medical Center.
